Howdy,
Here’s all the albums that were reviewed before a few weeks before Spring Break, but due to me going to SXSW and everyone going on Spring Break, some of these albums were delayed. The biggest thing that came back was the new, self-titled St. Vincent record which is A-MA-ZING. So good. One of my all time favorites of this year. How does she do it?
Another great album that got a review this week is Ava Luna’s most recent record, Electric Balloon. It’s soulful and jagged at the same time. It’s really interesting and body-moving, which is always a great combination.
Have a good one, hope everyone enjoys this killer music!

ARTIST | ALBUM | DESCRIPTION | LABEL |
St. Vincent** | St. Vincent | Fantastic. Adding to an already stunning discog, Annie Clark really brings the energy on this album. Less shredding, more electronic. Great songwriting. | Loma Vista |
Black Lips* | Underneath the Rainbow | Garage-pink with a slight southern rock vibe. Produced by Patrick Carney of The Black Keys | Vice |
Ava Luna* | Electric Balloon | Art rock with funk and soul. Odd guitar rhythms and chord structures. Very interesting in a Dirty Projectors/Talking Heads kind of way. | Western Vinyl |
Real Estate* | Atlas | Solid addition to their catalog. Very happy, beach/surf/laid back indie rock. Better production, more of the same, but still very solid. | Domino |
Bipolar Sunshine | Drowning Butterflies EP | Quality and fun electronic, very upbeat and consistent. | Priority |
Stone Jack Jones | Ancestor | Alternative country. Interesting, some songs are beautifully dark. Slow tempo, you’ll either like it or think it’s weird. | Western Vinyl |
Ume | Monuments | A pop record with a fuzz hard rock filter on it | Dangerbird |
Lime Cordiale | Falling Up the Stairs | Surf rock/alternative vibe with influences from bands like Weezer and Vampire Weekend. | s/r |
The Jungle Giants | She’s A Riot | Happy indie rock/pop. Dancey, rhythmic. Good vibes. | Amplifire Music |
Satellite Stories | Pine Trails | Dancey indie pop. Strong vocals. Dynamic, interesting. Nice progressions. | |
The Wet Secrets | Free Candy | Garage rock with a lot of songs in a pop structure. Sounds nothing like Arctic Monkeys or Surfer Blood, but still good. | s/r |
Natural Child | Dancin’ With Wolves | Bluesy rock, somewhat lo-fi. If you dream of country summer lovin, check this out. | Burger |
Axxa/Abraxas | Axxa/Abraxas | Psychedelic and fun guitar driven jams. Super relaxe and pleasant, maybe a touch rock at points | Captured Tracks |
Nite Haus | Transform The Dark | So much 80s synth: the female vocalist clashes with repetitive synths. | s/r |
WhoMadeWho | Dreams | Warm alt/electronic, male vox, soft pop synths, 80s influenced beats and warm, warbly vocals. Very radio friendly. | Volcano |
Guided By Voices | Motivational Jumpsuit | Alternative indie rock. Short songs, all sound pretty similar. These dudes have been churning out like three records a year. | GBV Inc |
Carsick Cars | 3 | Beijing’s best band. Hard rock with some shoegaze elements. Pretty good. | Maybe Mars |
Priscilla Ahn | This Is Where We Are | Experimental dream pop. Lots of different sounds centering around Ahn’s airy vocals. | SQE |
