Alima International, a non-competitive dance group at UConn hosted their annual fall showcase on Thursday, November 17th. The Student Union Ballroom held performances from guest UConn dance ensembles such as UConn Tap Club, Illumin8, UConn Irish, UConn Allstars, UConn Tap Club, Taiko, and UConn Breakdancing Club. The night also included a special appearance and performance by Alima at the University of Rhode Island, the founding chapter of the organization. An inviting feel was truly an understatement as guests were invited in, seated, and ready to see fellow students, friends, and family members show off choreography that was in preparation for months.
The night promoted awareness for the Adhunika Foundation, an organization dedicated to promoting social change, education, and psycho-socio empowerment to Bangladeshi women. With the donations collected, Alima UConn will contribute to the cause, in reflection of their mission to “look past nationality and ethnicity and see that we are all connected through dance and music.”
After an exciting, positive, and electrically invigorating night of performances, myself, very unskilled and dance, was even interested in joining. “Alima, “an Arabic word meaning “those who are skilled at music and dance,” should be synonymous with “creating a positive and inclusive environment for dancers and viewers alike.”
