On Saturday, April 9, Gogol Bordello‘s ‘Gypsy Punks: Underdog World Strike 10th Anniversary Tour’ started off with a bang at College Street Music Hall in New Haven, CT. With the highly talented Greek folk band Xylouris White opening the evening, it was sure to be a special event. Composed of guitarist/vocalist George Xylouris and drummer Jim White, the duo performed haunting melodic songs from their 2014 album ‘Goats‘. The concert continued with uniquely synchronized songs such as ‘Run and La’ and ‘Old School Sousta’ echoing throughout the music hall. Bringing listeners into a different world, Xylouris White did a solid job of setting the vibe right for Gogol Bordello to take the stage.

With the crowd ready for some wildly unique and fun music, Gogol Bordello quickly introduced a myriad of elements such as wooden boxes, electric violins, and accordions. With a rousing theatrical entrance and the aforementioned musical elements, the gypsy punk group captivated the audience to the fullest. Combined with multicolor strobes, lasers, fog, and even more instruments, the undeniable pull of this time-tested group (they began their fun in 1999) was a welcomed vibe in New Haven.

With classics like ‘Illumanation’, ‘Through the Roof ‘n’ Underground’, and ‘Start Wearing Purple’ blasting throughout the space, all in attendance bounced along to the carefree style. With mosh pits and crowded aisles alike, there wasn’t a soul in the place that didn’t seem to be having a great time. ‘Wanderlust King’ was a special moment in the show, bringing a sense of magic into the experience and providing a connection between the band and their fans, and between friends and strangers in the crowd. With ringing chants of “One more song!” and “Let’s go Gogol!,” the band brought in the final song of the evening – ‘Undestructable’, off of the very album that the tour itself celebrates.
