UConn’s third annual “Underwear Mile” went off without a hitch on Sunday. The temperature was in the mid 50s and many participants came dressed in costumes or sporting colorful underwear. UConn sophomore Suraj Muddasani, one of the Underwear Mile organizers, said the main goal of the event is to raise money for underprivileged children.

“We’re trying to raise money for a non-profit organization in the Dominican republic that is going to provide education to underprivileged kids,” said Muddasani.

Plus, he said: “it’s just crazy fun.”

Lior Trestman, a volunteer, said he believed that this event helps students to think more universally. “The project’s focuses on education with the goal of giving people some of the tools that we have so that they can help themselves and empowering UConn students to think more broadly about global service.”

UConn freshman and first time participant Kimberly Mentryka said she was excited to take part in the mile.

“I’m excited and I might meet new people and I think it’s a great way to get out there in the UConn community,” said Metryka.

She also urged other freshmen to “get out there and get involved, the more people you meet the better you’ll get into the university and I think this is just a great opportunity to do so.”

Katherine Conway, also a freshman, said she enjoyed being part of such a big event, especially since it helps people in need.

“I think it’s awesome that they are doing it for a good cause because it’s fun anyways so to be able to do it for a good cause is awesome,” Conway said.

Sophomore Jay Meyer decided to sign up for the event again this year after participating in last year’s mile. “There’s something thrilling about running outside in your underwear, I live for this moment,” Meyer said.
